When leaders talk about purpose, people often imagine vision statements, strategy decks, and inspirational speeches.
But sometimes purpose looks much smaller, and much more personal.
In a recent interview, Nike CEO Elliott Hill described keeping his personal email accessible to employees and staying connected to people across the organization. He has also emphasized bringing sport and people back to the center of the company culture.
The lesson reaches beyond one company.
Purpose-driven leadership is not just asking, Where are we going?
It is also asking:
Who am I listening to?
Who feels seen?
Who believes their voice matters here?
The strongest leaders do not create distance as they rise. They create connection.
Because people rarely follow titles alone.
They follow leaders who make them feel like they belong to something meaningful.
